My son and I say we'll copy the Halloween street next year
A street a few blocks over hands kids candy and pours parents wine amid fog and flashing lights. My son and I talk about copying it. We never do.

On Halloween, I take my son trick-or-treating. We stay in our neighborhood, but we head a few blocks over to one really popular street where the houses just totally do it up. From the minute you get there, they're giving candy to the kids and pouring wine for the adults. This year's walk, on Oct. 31, is still ahead of us.
So we both arrive giddy. I know I'm going to have a drink of wine in my hand as I wander along with my son, and he knows he's going to have candy in his bag.
At the start he's beside himself, running house to house, at the height of his enthusiasm and energy. That wanes as the evening goes on, I guess. Me, I'm like a pig in shit. Happy as can be, enjoying the night out, strolling, chitchatting with other parents, having a nice night.
What often stays with me is awe at the level of detail and energy people put into their decorations. They build entire experiences outside their homes: haunted houses, sound effects, flashing lights, fog machines. It's very immersive.
My son and I are both kind of into that part, the entertainment, the experience of it. So when we leave, we talk about it. Next year we're going to get that, we say. Next year we're going to get that. We never end up doing it, but we talk about it. I'd say the talking has become part of the night.
